Chicken Breeds

Horizon Acres poultry feeds are perfect for all breeds of chickens.
Here’s a list to help you find the right chickens for your needs.

What breed of chicken?

There are a great many chicken breeds that can be obtained at your local Buchheit store. Be sure to choose a breed that is suited to your goals.

  1. Chicken breeds are sorted into 4 categories: meat producers, egg producers, dual purpose breeds and ornamental breeds. Choosing the right breed is essential for peak production. (Remember that egg shell color is determined by the breed of chicken, not the diet.)
  2. Consider your climate; some breeds are more heat or cold tolerant. For instance, chickens with smaller combs and wattles are less prone to frost bite and chickens with larger combs and wattles dissipate heat better. Many heritage breeds were developed to thrive in specific geographical locations.
  3. Check local regulations to determine is there are limitations to the amount of chickens and if roosters are allowed.
  4. You may also want to consider if your chickens will be allowed to free range outside of their enclosure. Many breeds listed as “active” do not do well in confined spaces. Some breeds are better foragers than other and will be able to forage for a portion their food.
